Lovely walk but, as others have pointed out, the descent from Kanturk as described is tough sledding.

Instead of bearing for the west end of Lough Dan (down a steep, wet gully full of ferns), follow the obvious shoulder bearing towards the centre of Lough Dan.
Where this hits the “road”, follow the “exit” sign towards the lake and follow the gorgeous lakeside path home.

The start has also changed: from the small uphill road leading out of Oldbridge, follow the “Scarr mountain” sign which brings you northward along a paved road to where you follow a ridge directly up to Scarr (gates are secured with chain loops, but not locked).

I’d really avoid like the plague at this stage – the views are lovely but you win’t barely gst to see them over peoples shoulders & the angst of others if you dare break step on the narrow paths for a moment. Apart from being busier than Grafton St on Christmas Eve most weekends its probably the most likely covid central stop for infection spread atm. Pick a werkday and very very early if you are going to bother or just aviod.

Comment on The Spinc by Helen https://www.wicklowwalks.com/the-spinc/comment-page-1#comment-174106 Wed, 23 Jun 2021 08:25:06 +0000 http://walks.hamilton.ie/?p=6#comment-174106 An Spinc – the ‘white’ arrow route – I LOVE this walk. The path has sleepers that you walk along for much of the way in one direction and so its really soothing and relaxing – you’re not spending all your time watching your feet or checking for bogholes or marshy patches as you walk along so you can relax a lot more & enjoy the views. The sleeper path is wide enough for one person comfortably so you can enjoy the peace without someone boring the earhole off you about work or their bad boyfriend/whomever. Deer sometimes graze at the end where the sleepers come down to the river if you are quiet enough as you walk at that part you might spot huddles of them before they bound off.
I prefer to start by following the woodlands path through the forest past (opposite from) St Kevins bed and walk up through the old miners ‘village’ and then up the zigzag path to cross and meet up with the sleepers over the far side of the (first and only) bridge. They have added a few more white arrows to encourage you long and there are bit of it now with vague sleeper payhs so its less vague than it was 8 years ago!! I love love love this walk and it takes a smooth relaxing 3 hours complete with stop for sambos and lots of photostops!
I prefer to start via the miners ‘village’ as the thought of getting out of the car & doing a fierce aerobic workout of 700 steps is too much for my frail & lazy psyche! A georgous walk & one for good and bad weather IMO.

Comment on Sugar Loaf by Helen https://www.wicklowwalks.com/sugar-loaf/comment-page-1#comment-174105 Wed, 23 Jun 2021 07:59:06 +0000 http://walks.hamilton.ie/?p=8#comment-174105 We climbed the Sugarloaf to celebrate a birthday & spent a fair bit of time asking about the path up. When we got there – we parked at the caroark with the wierd arches ‘near’ (sort of) the Glen of the Downes Hotel. To our enormous surprise after a smooth initial start up the side of the mountain which gave way to scree and rocks – there was no ‘path’ up – you had to choose your pitch and clamber up the rocks using hands and feet to pull yourself up the mountain! I certainly would urge caution on wet or God forbid frosty days. Spectacular views of lots of green from the top and lots of humming bees to keep you company. Bring lots of water and a raincoat for the ever changing weather. The summit is lovely flat suntrap!

Apparently it was closed during lockdown. Don’t suppose anyone has driven by and checked?

Lovely loop around the 2 lakes, sun shining but bitter wind. Started from Quarry car park at place where telegraph pole crosses road as mentioned and just followed the track all the way. Fantastic views, straight forward hike route and easy to follow, very muddy for November but good boots and gaiters helped. Being Level 5 lock down, when we got to the the Eagles Crag we saw a roving Garda car turning cars & motorhomes back towards Glencree and taking down all the car regs from the Quarry parking. No fixed notice on the windscreen when we got back but am expecting something in the post :-( Completed the loop in 3 hours with lunch and a few stops. Would highly recommend. Great site, thx for the info.
